What Are Crypto Transfers?
Crypto transfers are executed on the blockchain and are irreversible once confirmed. IG cannot cancel, reverse, or recover a transfer where incorrect details have been provided. You are responsible for ensuring all transfer details are accurate, including the wallet address, network, token, and any required destination tag or memo. Sending assets using incorrect details will result in permanent loss of funds. Transfers are typically completed within 10–50 minutes but may take longer depending on blockchain network conditions. Delays due to network congestion are outside of IG’s control. Before initiating a transfer, ensure you understand how crypto transfers work, including the risks associated with on-chain transactions. |
IG Crypto now supports direct cryptocurrency transfers, allowing you to move digital assets between your IG account and external wallets or other platforms via the blockchain.
Note: The ability to transfer tokens is subject to change at any time, though this is expected to be infrequent. For the latest information on supported tokens, check the Which Cryptocurrencies Are Supported for Transfers? article or contact our support team via Chat or WhatsApp. |
IG currently offers:
- Transfer In — A Transfer In is a transaction that allows you to deposit cryptocurrency from an external wallet or exchange directly into your IG Crypto account via the blockchain.
Key concepts
Term | What it means |
Blockchain | A public, decentralised record of all cryptocurrency transactions. Transfers made on the blockchain are permanent and cannot be altered or reversed. |
On-chain transaction | A transfer made directly on the blockchain network — as opposed to one that happens internally within a platform. Crypto transfers are on-chain and irreversible once confirmed. |
External wallet | Any cryptocurrency wallet or exchange account that exists outside of IG — including self-hosted wallets (e.g. MetaMask, Ledger) and accounts on other exchanges (e.g. Coinbase, Binance). |
Self-hosted wallet | A wallet you control directly (e.g. MetaMask, Ledger). May require ownership verification as part of compliance checks. |
Exchange wallet | A wallet held on another platform (e.g. Coinbase, Binance). Ownership is validated automatically where possible. |
Network | The blockchain network a cryptocurrency operates on. When initiating a transfer, IG will display the supported network for each token. Always ensure the network shown on IG matches the one you use on your external wallet or exchange — sending on the wrong network will result in permanent loss of funds. |
Wallet address | A unique string of letters and numbers that identifies where cryptocurrency should be sent — similar to a bank account number. Every transfer requires a valid wallet address for the correct token and network. |
Destination tag / Memo | An additional reference code required by some tokens (e.g. XRP, XLM) alongside the wallet address. Missing a destination tag may result in funds being lost or delayed. |
Why use crypto transfers?
Transfer In lets you consolidate existing crypto holdings from other platforms into your IG account without needing to sell and repurchase. You can bring assets you already hold elsewhere onto IG and manage everything in one place.
How are crypto transfers different from buying and selling?
When you buy cryptocurrency on IG, you fund the purchase using cash held in one of your other IG accounts (Share Dealing, CFD, or Spread Bet), and the crypto is credited to your IG Crypto account.
When you transfer in, you are moving existing cryptocurrency from an external wallet address directly to your IG Crypto account via the blockchain — no cash is involved.
Are there any fees?
IG does not charge any fees for Transfer In, including network fees — so the full amount you send will be credited to your account.
Note: Fees charged by your external wallet or exchange when initiating a Transfer In are outside of IG's control and will be set by that provider. |
Where can I access crypto transfers?
